Family Reunification Visa
Reagrupación Familiar
The Family Reunification Visa (Reagrupación Familiar) allows non-EU citizens who have a family member legally residing in Spain to join them. The sponsoring family member (reagrupante) must have held legal residence in Spain for at least one year and have authorization to stay for at least another year. This visa covers spouses or registered partners, children under 18 (or under 21 in some cases, up to 26 for children of Spanish citizens since the 2025 reform), and dependent parents over 65. Note: family members of Spanish citizens now have a separate specific pathway and should not use the regular reunification process. The initial permit is valid for one year and is tied to the sponsor's residence status. It can be renewed and eventually leads to independent residency and potentially citizenship.

Step-by-Step Application Process
Sponsor requests the housing report
The sponsor in Spain requests an Informe de Vivienda (housing adequacy report) from their local Ayuntamiento or autonomous community. This certifies the home can accommodate the family. Processing takes 15–30 days.
Sponsor files the reunification application
The sponsor submits the family reunification authorization request (Autorización de Residencia por Reagrupación Familiar) at the Oficina de Extranjería in their province, with all supporting documentation.
Wait for authorization
The immigration office processes the request within approximately 45 days (silencio administrativo positivo — if no response in 45 days, it's considered approved). The sponsor receives the resolution.
Family member applies for visa at consulate
Once authorized, the family member applies for their visa at the Spanish consulate in their country of residence within one month of the authorization notification. Submit all personal documents and the approved authorization.
Consular processing
The consulate processes the visa application, typically within 1–2 months. Biometrics are collected at the consulate.
Processing Time
Authorization phase: up to 45 days. Consular visa processing: 1–2 months. Total process: approximately 3–5 months from initial application to arrival in Spain.

- Housing report: free in most municipalities (some charge ~€20–€50)

Common Mistakes to Avoid
Not requesting the housing report early enough
The Informe de Vivienda can take 15–30 days and is a strict requirement. Many applications are delayed because the sponsor didn't request this report in advance. Start this process first.
Sponsor not meeting income requirements
The sponsor must demonstrate stable income meeting the IPREM thresholds. Irregular income, recent unemployment, or insufficient savings can lead to denial. Having at least 6 months of consistent payslips is important.
Missing the one-month consular application window
Once the authorization is approved, the family member has only ONE MONTH to apply for the visa at the consulate. Missing this deadline means the authorization expires and you must restart the process.
Incorrect or incomplete family relationship documents
Marriage or birth certificates from some countries require additional steps beyond apostille — such as legalization through the Hague Convention chain. Verify your country's specific requirements well in advance.
Assuming Social Security covers dependents automatically
While the sponsor's Social Security may cover dependents in some cases, it's safer to arrange separate health insurance for the visa application. Some consulates specifically require a private policy.
Tips & Advice
- ✓The housing report is the single biggest bottleneck. Request it from your Ayuntamiento before gathering any other documentation — it can take up to a month and the rest of the process can't proceed without it.
- ✓Family reunification permits allow the family member to work in Spain without any additional authorization. This is a significant advantage over some other visa types.
- ✓After 5 years of legal residence, the family member can apply for permanent residency (residencia de larga duración) independent of the sponsor's status.
- ✓If the sponsor is a Spanish or EU citizen (not just a resident), the process is different and easier — family members of Spanish citizens now have a specific separate pathway (2025 reform) and should not use regular family reunification. They apply for an EU Family Card (Tarjeta de Familiar de Ciudadano de la UE) instead.
- ✓Keep in mind that the 45-day silence rule (silencio administrativo positivo) means that if the immigration office doesn't respond within 45 days, your application is considered approved. You can then proceed to the consular stage.
